Transit service from Lacombe to Red Deer ending Aug. 28

LACOMBE – BOLT, the regional transit system that takes passengers between Red Deer, Blackfalds and Lacombe, will end operations as of Aug. 28, 2020.

The service was originally scheduled to end by Sept. 30, however, a request by the Town of Blackfalds to end the service ahead of schedule was granted to accommodate their new on-demand service.

The City of Lacombe Council voted to end the BOLT transit agreement on Sept. 23, 2019. The agreement included a one-year cancellation notice, which was set to expire on Sept. 30, 2020.

The city was investing more than $200,000 per year on the service. Council believed at the time residents weren’t seeing a return on their investment due to issues of low ridership and efficiency of the service.

“The decision to cancel the BOLT Regional Transit service was a difficult one, but one we felt was necessary as the substantial investment required by the service did not result in sustainable ridership levels,” said Mayor Grant Creasey. “In these times of fiscal restraint, council needs to take a lead role in financial stewardship.”

Lacombe FCSS will continue to operate the Lacombe Connex service. Information for Connex can be found at https://www.lacombefcss.net/programs-and-services/seniors/lacombe-connex/.
